VISION

Ecomosque is a new framework for regenerating mosques.

The aim of EcoMosque is to replace the current provision with a much better environmentally and economically sustainable building. Thus, the University of Salford will be the home of the UK’s first Ecomosque which confirms the university’s international status as being a leading bastion of academic excellence.

Ecomosque will be open to everyone, irrespective of faith and background and will nurture inclusivity and build community cohesion. It is hoped that the model will become an exemplar for community and faith centres everywhere.

Community lies at the heart of the EcoMosque concept. Salford brings together a diverse community and this very diversity is essential to the future well-being.

The Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity (UNESCO, 2001) elaborates the concept by stating: "...cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature”; it becomes “one of the roots of development understood not simply in terms of economic growth, but also as a means to achieve a more satisfactory intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual existence".

By creating an EcoMosque that caters for the needs of youth, women, for Muslims and non-Muslims, we aim to deliver a radical and innovative project that will grow and prosper with the wider community.
